Habit and habitat

 Migratory Harpodon.



General characters

(1) Commonly called as Bombay duck called in Hindi Nehari.

(2) Body elongated, cylindrical with silvery white abdomen-scales deciduous.

(3) Wide mouth with numerous small teeth. Jaws lower jaw longer. Gill opening wide.

(4) Dorsal fin in middle. Dorsal and anal fins without spines. Small caudal (adipose, fin present. Caudal fin trilobed. Pectoral fins very long.

(5) Lateral lines slightly keeled.

(6) Fin formula D-12 to 14 and A-13 to 15.


Economic importance

 Commercially important fishes.


Geographical distribution

 Harpodon is distributed in India espicially eastern coasts of Bengal, Orissa and Bombay.

2. Rastrileger kanagurta

General characters

1) Head length equal to height of body.

2) Body laterally compressed, snout pointed.

3) Eyes with thick, adipose eyelids.

4) Mouth large, oblique with deep cleft.

5) Teeth small in a single row on both jaws.

6) First dorsal fin spinous and its first spine shorter than second spine. Second dorsal soft rayed.

7) Dorsal and anal finlets are five to six.

8) Pectoral fin soft rayed and pelvic fins with one spine and five soft rays.

9) Caudal fin is deeply forked with pointed lobes.

10) Colouration of the body bluish-green tending towards grey above and yellow on belly and at sides with about three grayish longitudinal strips along upper half of the body.

11) It is having commercial value in India.

West coast of India.

3. Cynoglossus (Sole fish)

General characters

1) Body is dorso - ventrally compressed.

2) Both eyes are located on left side.

3) Pre-opercular margin beneath skin

4) Dorsal fin is originating on head.

5) Pectoral fins are absent.

6) Dorsal fin and anal fins are confluent with caudal fin.

7) Scales are ctenoid type 14-16 scales between the two lateral lines.

8) Light brownish colour above with dark brown moltings on i forming several transverse bands, whitish yellow.

9) Mainly feed on bottom fauna.


Structural Adaptations

1) Due to its flattened body, it is adopted to live in bottom area c sea. Both the eyes are turned to one side, the eye side is coloure where as the blind or resting side is pale white.

2) This fish possess a capacity to change their body colour to mat with the surroundings.


Distribution

Seas and esturies of India and common along the Malbar Coast.
